Highest motorable Road in Ladakh (NATIONAL)

    Ladakh MP Jamyang Tsering Namgyal inaugurated a strategically significant route connecting Leh and the Pangong Lake in Leh on Tuesday, claiming that the portion travelling through the Kela Pass at 18,600 feet will be the world's highest motorable way.The road, constructed by the 58 Engineer Regiment of the Indian Army, will reduce 41-km of travel from Leh (Zingral to Tangtse) to the picturesque Pangong Lake crossing the Kela Pass, the Lok Sabha member said.

    "Tourists will be able to see the world's highest motorable road, rare medicinal plants, participate in snow sport activities, see nomadic livestock, lakes and other attractions," Mr. Namgyal said.


    "The road, which was inaugurated today, will be the world's highest motorable road for the general public at a height of 18,600 feet. Up till now, the Khardungla Pass was the world's highest motorable road for the general public at a height of 18,380 feet."


    He said the road will play a major role in the future to boost the socio-economic status of local residents, especially of the people of the Lalok region of Ladakh, as it will facilitate tourism. During the inaugural ceremony, held at Kela Top, at an elevation of 18,600 feet, he praised the Indian Army's dedication to the road's construction, particularly the 58 Engineer Regiment. 


    He also emphasised the government's commitment to building border infrastructure, including roads and bridges. The road was inaugurated in presence of Lt Gen P. G. K. Menon, General Officer Commanding 14th Corp, Tashi Namgyal Yakzee and Stanzin Chosphel, Executive Councillors, Ven. Lama Konchok Tsephel, Councillor of the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC), Leh, among others.

  • Initially, BRO was functional under the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. But since 2015, the organisation under the Ministry of Defence
  • BRO is operational in 21 Indian states and 1 union territory. It also works for our friendly neighbouring countries like Afghanistan, Bhutan, Myanmar, and Sri Lanka
  • The Organisation was formed on May 7, 1960, to maintain and develop the Indian remote areas of north and northeast situated near the borders
  • In June 2018, Lt General Sanjeev Kumar Shrivastava took over the post of Director General in Border Roads Organisation and is the 
  • The composition of this organization comprises Officers and troops who are selected from the Indian Army’s Corps of Engineers, Army Service Corps, Military Police, and other personnel

    Candidates selected through the UPSC IES (Indian Engineering Services) are appointed to this organization. The defence sector of the country receives the most help from the Border Roads Organization. It has endeared itself to the public by expanding into a wide range of construction and development projects, including airfields, building projects, defence works, and tunnels. 


During times of peace and times of war, BRO serves two distinct purposes.

Significance of BRO during Peace

  • Contribute in the social-economic development of border states
  • Developing the infrastructure of operational roads for the staff

Significance of BRO during War

  • Maintaining and developing the roads through the Line of Control and perform any other specific task assigned by the Government
  • Apart from the above situation, BRO's assistance to the security and development of emerging border regions in the north and northeast is also critical.
  • BRO has contributed to the development of infrastructure not only in India, but also in our friendly neighbouring countries. 
  • In Afghanistan, one of these is the Delaram-Zaranj Highway, which was built in 2008.

AIIMS Bhubaneswar to get its first brain bank (LOCAL)

Profile photo AIIMS Bhubaneswar A brain bio-bank will soon be established at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Bhubaneswar to aid neurobiology research. The ICMR will fund the establishment of this one-of-a-kind facility in eastern India.
