Sunscreen damages Coral, Thailand banned the usage (INTERNATIONAL)

 


    Corals and the fragile marine environment are harmed by sunscreens and other cosmetics and pollutants. This is also true in Indian waters, making it vital to assess tourist activities and consider methods to minimize their effects, according to an expert.


    Because sunscreen contains coral-damaging chemicals, Thailand's government recently banned its use in all of the country's marine national parks.


    Vardhan Patankar, the marine biologist, said:

Though coral reefs in India are accorded the highest level of legal protection under the Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972, there is also a need to reduce the overall impact of tourism on them through sensitization programs and by introducing and implementing specific tourism and dive-related policies.


    According to Thailand’s Department of Conservation, four ingredients (Oxybenzone, Octinoxate, 4-methyl benzylidene camphor, or Butylparaben) found in sun creams have been shown to kill coral larvae, impede coral reproduction and cause reef bleaching. Anyone who breaks the rule faces a fine of up to 100,000 baht (Rs 222,260). 


    Officials have not revealed how they plan to enforce the new restriction, though. Palau, a Pacific island, and Hawaii, a US state, have both enacted similar limitations. Sunscreens contain hazardous chemicals like Oxybenzone, Benzophenone-1, Benzophenone-8, OD-PABA, 4-Methyl benzylidene camphor, 3-Benzylidene camphor, nano-Titanium dioxide, nano-Zinc oxide, Octinoxate, Octocrylene, that is harmful for marine life.


    Stagnant growth, tissue buildup, and DNA damage have all been observed in the reefs as a result of sunscreen use. It also causes malformations and growth anomalies, as well as disrupting a coral's hormonal growth and reproductive processes.


    According to the National Geographic magazine:

    About 14,000 tonnes of sunscreen are estimated to be released into the oceans each year. Almost 82,000 chemicals from personal care products are expected to be tainting the sea bodies. This has led to the depreciation of 80 per cent of the corals in the Caribbean in the last five decades.


    In a study done by Scientists from the Polytechnic University of the Marche Region in Ancona, Italy, it was discovered that sunscreen that washes off swimmers in reef waters threatens approximately 10 per cent of the world’s coral reefs. According to the study, as tourism increases in tropical reef areas, the impact of sunscreens on coral bleaching may increase significantly in the future.



    Patankar said sunscreens did not dissolve in the water in a short time. “When released into the ocean water, it forms a layer on surface of the corals and impacts zooxanthellae (symbiotic dinoflagellate algae within coral tissue) and the polyp movement, which directly impacts the growth and photosynthesis process of the reefs,” he said. 


    The banned compounds, according to marine biologists and environmentalists, including the United States' National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), can reduce ecosystem resistance to climate change causes. This will hinder the regeneration of degraded fauna and habitats. 


    The resulting damage to coral reefs in the South Pacific, Caribbean, Australia, Israel, and elsewhere, including coral bleaching, poses a threat to one-quarter of marine species, as well as shorelines and flourishing tourism in impacted areas.
